Shawn Howe

Obituary of Shawn Briant Howe

Shawn Briant Howe, 59, of Elmira, NY, passed away on December 3, 2025. Born on October 19, 1966, in Elmira, he was the son of Robert Howe and Bette (Brewer) Howe. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sister, Marcy Naylor. A proud graduate of Southside High School, Shawn went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps from 1993 to 1997. He remained a Marine at heart for the rest of his life, as Shawn would say “once a Marine, always a Marine”. After completing his military service, he worked for the New York State Department of Corrections, where he dedicated many years before retiring in January 2021. Above all else, Shawn was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his children: Shawna De Jesus, Brandon (Hannah) Howe, and Rachael (Ethan) Montana; and by his cherished grandchildren: Alex, Micah, Oriana, Parker, and a new grandbaby expected on January 26th. He is also survived by his siblings: Sonya (Bryan) Lane, Melanie (Hope) Shaffer, and Shane (Angela) Howe, along with many nieces and nephews. Shawn is also survived by his former wife, Jennifer Bell, with whom he shared over 40 years of friendship. Though their paths changed over time, they remained united in caring for and supporting their children and grandchildren. For over the past year, Shawn reconnected with a high school sweetheart, Lori Jordan, and the two found great happiness together. They had great aspirations for their future together. Lori’s two grandchildren, Waylon and Levi, whom Shawn adored and lovingly embraced as his own, will miss him dearly. Known for his generosity, humor, and open door, Shawn’s home was always a gathering place. He took pride in being the first to help anyone who needed it and found great joy in being a dad and bringing people together. Shawn had a deep love for animals and cared for many cats throughout his life. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan — loyal through every season, whether they were winning or losing. Shawn will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, his pride as a Marine, and the love he shared so freely with those around him. His legacy lives on in his family, his friendships, and the countless lives he touched. Semper Fi In lieu of flowers, Shawn would have loved nothing more than for donations to be made to any local animal shelter, helping animals in need — a cause that was always close to his heart. Family and Friends are invited to Barber Funeral Home: 413 S. Main St., Horseheads NY 14845 on Monday, December 8th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm for calling hours, followed by a memorial service at 4:00pm, where Shawn's service to NYSDOCCS will be honored.
