Loretta Burgett

Obituary of Loretta I. Burgett

Loretta I. Burgett, age 73, of Horseheads, NY, left her earthly home to be with her heavenly Father on February 26, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, Stephen T. Burgett of 31 years, her sisters, Barb Burlew and Harriet Mathews, son Dale Smith with wife Carol Erdman and their children Kayla, Don, and Cori, son Ken Smith with wife Beth and their son Kalton, daughter Stephanie Wells with husband Jeff and their children Brett and Ryan, and son Dwight Burgett and his daughter Ashley and his grand-daughter Emma, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Family was extremely important to Loretta. She and Stephen had a great marriage, enjoying life’s adventures by each other’s side. Stephen feels greatly blessed to have her as a wife for 31 years. She was extremely close with her sisters Barb and Harriett. They were always there for each other. She had a great relationship with all her family, and she loved them all. She was known for her hugging. She also loved her dogs Cassie Marie and Molly B. Loretta was the queen of yard sales. She and Stephen loved to organize and hold one of the area’s largest rummage sales that many looked forward to twice every year. Loretta loved traveling to numerous places, including a tough hike to the top of Delicate Arch in Utah at age 71, Alaska and Bahama cruises, and Bar harbor, to name a few. She carefully cataloged all her pictures and memories. Loretta had many hobbies including golfing, bowling, landscaping, creating wonderful flower gardens, cake decorating, and eating M&Ms. Loretta had great empathy and compassion and was always there to help anyone in need, and did not hesitate to get her hands dirty or help with hard labor. She also dependably helped with the North Chemung Food Pantry. Loretta met all of life’s challenges head on with joy and optimism. Anyone wishing to help her spread that joy may do so with donations to the North Chemung Food Pantry, (607) 732-1001. Those wishing to celebrate her life may attend her memorial service on Saturday March 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the North Chemung United Methodist Church, 677 Breesport Rd, Lowman, NY 14861.
