Obituary of Patricia Galey Hauser

HAUSER, Patricia Galey Hauser (Pat) was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 23, 1930 to Charles and Helene Galey. After living for 10 years in the city, the family moved to suburban Lombard where she eventually went to Glenbard High School. She then attended Grinnell College majoring in German and obtaining Phi Beta Kappa national honors, graduating in 1951. Pat is survived by her husband David of almost 66 years, her children Catherine (Dean Krafft) Bargar of Newfield, NY, John (Maureen) Hauser and Anne (Theodore) Loring of Eureka, California. Grandchildren are Matthew (Naomi) of Arlington, MA, Elizabeth (Raed), Molly (Beverly) both of Ithaca, NY, David (Betsy) of Lexington, Kentucky and Scott (Caroline) of Chicago, Illinois. Great grandchildren Sylvia and Isaac of Arlington and August of Ithaca. Pat and David were married at Grinnell in the College Chapel in 1951. Their early years involved stays in Baltimore Maryland, Oxford Ohio, London Ontario and New Haven Connecticut before they moved to Elmira in 1969. She raised their children during these years while at times taking in foster babies and offering childcare to the families of friends and acquaintances. She also worked in college, public and school libraries. At the age of 51 she went to school in the BOCES nursing program where she graduated and passed the state LPN certification. She then worked in skilled nursing facilities at Bethany and St. Joseph's Hospital, deriving deep satisfaction from assisting the elderly and enjoying the fellowship of other nurses. She was also deeply involved in choral music for most of her life. She first met David in a musical production on campus at Grinnell. She was privileged to sing Verdi's Requiem with the Baltimore Symphony for one performance but the arrival of her first child prevented her from singing the second. She was a member of the New Haven Chorale and the Bach Singers there. In London they both joined the London Singers, a distinguished group of about 16 who performed four concerts of early and contemporary music each year. In Elmira she participated in Cantata Singers for over 30 years as well as the choir at First Presbyterian Church. Her heart was truly full of music, and she and her husband passed this musical spirit to their three children. All her life she busily sewed garments for her children and herself. Later she became a quilter of prize-winning quality, design and workmanship. She was a longtime member of Piecemakers, the local quilt guild. Before this she assisted with community sewing projects for Second Place East. Although committed to the well-being of her family, she always thought of others, especially those in need. She will be remembered as a sweet, intelligent, and a self- effacing person with a sparkle in her eye. Despite her gentle nature, she had a sharp sense of humor. She made a significant contribution to the lives of those around her. She had the gift of showing her family and those around her the true meaning of love. She will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service recalling everyone's memories of Pat will be held there at the conclusion of calling hours on Friday at 4:00 pm.
