Obituary of Madge A. Sliwa

Madge Audrey (Mitchell) Sliwa Age 89 of Glen Rock, NJ, and formerly of West Elmira, NY. She was born March 25, 1933 in Toronto, ON, the daughter of the late George and Frances (Tomlinson) Mitchell, and passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Monday, October 17th 2022. In addition to her parents, Madge was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, Walter G. Sliwa in 2019; as well as her sisters, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lillie Mitchell, Elizabeth (Mitchell) Murphy, Frank Murphy, Anne (Sliwa) Wells, Rose (Sliwa) Brown, and Edward Brown. Madge was also predeceased by her niece Sherry Beringer Boulton and her nephew Edward Michael Brown. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberley (Sliwa) and Edward Mendelsohn, and grandsons David and Danny Mendelsohn of Glen Rock, NJ and New York, NY; sisters Beryl (Robert) Beringer of Aylmer, Ontario and Ann (Barry) Wilson of Gonzalez, CA; sister-in-law Mary Kay (Sliwa) Brown of Big Flats; along with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Madge started her career as a secretary for Studebaker and worked for Mellor Advertising Agency and Sayles Evans Law Firm in Elmira as the office manager. She was a volunteer in the Boy Scouts of Canada and served on the board of the Elmira Pioneers. She saw the good in everyone and loved telling stories about her childhood with her four sisters. She watched almost every New York Yankees game all season long and adored being with her grandsons. Family and friends are invited to visit Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., in Horseheads, NY on Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 10-11am. Her service will be held there at 11am. She will be laid to rest in Rural Home Cemetery.
