Obituary of Barbara J. Horton

Barbara J. (Dann) Horton, 90, of Elmira, NY, passed away on , Wednesday, November 15, 2023 peacefully at her home surrounded by her family and friends. Born on August 26, 1933, in Elmira, NY, to Stanley and Phoebe (Crane) Dann. She was a graduate of Horseheads High School, the Arnot School of Nursing, Alfred University (BS), and Elmira College (MS). On June 26, 1955, Barb was married to Glen Horton, who predeceased her on July 2, 1999. They lived in Golden Glow (Big Flats, NY) for many happy years while raising their three sons. She married a second time to John Uszenski on August 9, 2003 and the couple spent 20 "golden years" together. Barb spent over 60 years of her life as a Registered Nurse employed with the Arnot-Ogden (Hospital) Medical Center. Over the decades she worked as a Head Nurse in various different units within the hospital eventually working her way up to her career dream of becoming a nursing instructor for the Renowned Arnot School of Nursing. After retiring as an instructor she continued on as a recruiter for the school as well as working in the AOMC Health-on-Demand program. Barb was also a committed member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elmira, where she served in several different capacities, including at one point as a Sunday school teacher. As an avid bowler and golfer Barb spent 45 years as a member of the Corning Country Club where she made many cherished friendships. Travel was also a favorite pastime, as Barb enjoyed several trips and cruises to exotic locales all over the world. Barb is survived by her three sons: Tim (Sue) Horton, Jay (Terry) Horton, and Dan (Christine) Horton, all of Elmira, NY, grandchildren: Kristin, Adam, Karley, Jeff, Allison, Glen, Austin, Caroline and Greyson, as well as great grandchildren Dante, Doc, Trenton, Natalie, Lucas, Zoey, Lacey, Tyler, Mercedes, Kailey, Liam, Ryan, and Colin. Preceded in death by her brother Jim, sister Joyce, and granddaughter Nicole. The family would like to thank dear friend Beth Cleveland, and the nurses and counselors of Care First Hospice for all their efforts to help Mom pass peacefully in the home she loved. Family and friends are invited to visit Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads on Tuesday, November 21st from 11 am to 1 pm. Her memorial service will be held at 1 pm. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY.
