Obituary of Joseph I. Along

Age 102, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024. He was born in Cortland, New York on November 7, 1921, the son of Julia and Diego Ottavio Along. Joe is survived by Catherine, his wife of almost 75 years and children Julia of Cortland, Elinor (James Messner) of Horseheads, James (Kathleen) of Dahlonega, GA and Mary (David Meade) of Erin. He was the proud grandparent of 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Joe graduated from SUNY Cortland and served in the Army during World War II. He was a teacher at Horseheads High School for over 20 years and a founding member of the Chemung County School Districts Federal Credit Union, now the First Heritage Credit Union. Joe was a member of Elmira Heights Rotary, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, the Gold Card and active in St. Mary Our Mother Church. Family and friends are invited to his Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 22nd 2024,vat the Horseheads American Legion, Bentley-Trumble Post 442, 71 Old Ithaca Rd, Horseheads, NY 14845. Military honors will be held there at 11:30 am, with a time to gather afterwards from 12pm to 3pm.
