Obituary of Margaret Jane O'Brien

Margaret J. (Dolan) O'Brien Age 81, of Horseheads. She passed on Thursday September 26, 2024 to be with her beloved husband Timothy W. O'Brien, who predeceased her in May. She was born in Elmira to parents Frank and Jean Dolan as one of five sisters. After graduating from Elmira Free Academy, she went to work for Sears Roebuck, became a department manager and met her husband Tim at the optical shop. Although she left Sears to raise her family, she did not leave behind her skills in business. She opened O'Brien's Hearing Aid Center and soon after, West Elmira Optical with her husband. Not content with two businesses she opened Angels and Little Friends, a doll and collectibles shop with the help of her sister Carol VanDeusen. Her entrepreneurship and interest in drawing, ceramics and handwriting analysis enriched her life and those around her. She also loved decorating for the holidays and created a magical space for family and friends. Her devotion and caring for her husband, sons and grandchildren was unrivaled. Margaret's spirit burned brightly, and her family and friends are so much richer for her presence in their lives. Along with her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister Joan (Dolan) Aucter; nephews Todd VanDeusen and Jay Heverly; and close friend and neighbor Kathy Siglin. She is survived by her sons Timothy (Liane) O'Brien, and Sean (Erin) O'Brien; and grandchildren Connor, Brenna, Margaret, and Nathan. Also surviving are sisters Carol VanDeusen, Susan Dolan, and Mary (Jim) Manly; sister-in-law Patricia (O'Brien) Barber; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to visit the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., in Horseheads, NY on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00pm. A time of sharing will follow at 7:00pm. A Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 4th, 2024 at Woodlawn Cemetery. Guests should gather at the Walnut Street entrance at 11:00 AM to join the procession to the graveside. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting a local business this weekend in Margaret's entrepreneurial spirit.
