Obituary of Benjamin Albert Hill

HILL, Benjamin A. Age 96 of W. Lenox Ave. Elmira Heights passed away Aug. 20,2011 at the Arnot Ogden medical Center. Ben was born the oldest son of 15 siblings on Dec. 13, 1914 in Big Flats to Benjamin and Olive (VanGorder) Hill. He is survived by his wife, Jean (O’Hanlon) Hill; Children, Shirley Hemenway of NC, Sharon Buchland of Horseheads, Barbara (Richard) Travis of NC, Donna (Jim) Van de Bogart of Elmira, Harold (Roberta) Hill MS; Step children, Sharon (Tom) Gurney of OK, Patricia Hamernick of NJ; Many grandchildren, great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren; Siblings, Carl (Isabel) Hill of Sebring, FL, Lora (Roy) Palmer of Big Flats, Lester (Patricia) Hill of Horseheads, Alice (Dean) Montgomery of NC, Arland Hill of Thailand and Vern (Crystal) Hill of Elmira; Sisters-in-law, Myrna Hill of Elmira, Gladys Hill of Big Flats and Millie Hill of Horseheads. He was also predeceased by his Sons-in-law, Robert Hemenway and Dennis Hamernick; siblings, Eleanor Hill, Richard (Ada) Hill, Floyd, Lloyd, Gerald and Raymond Hill, Ben was a US Army veteran of WWII serving as a corporal and MP. He was a member of the Elmira Heights American Legion and Oakwood United Methodist Church. Ben retired as a machine operator from Weyerhaeuser--the former MacMillan Bloedel in Elmira Heights, NY. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Wed. Aug. 24, 2011 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm. His service will take place in the funeral home at the conclusion of calling hours at 12:30 pm with the Rev. Patrick Holder officiating. Military Honors will also be accorded Ben at the conclusion of services.
