Obituary of Julius D. Kohena

KOHENA, Julius D. “Jerry” Age 81 of Hector and formerly a longtime resident of Elmira Heights, passed away March 1, 2012 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Julius was born Orthodox Christian Palm Sunday on April 13, 1930 in Elmira, NY to John and Elizabeth (Haverlak) Kohena. His is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley (Hilton) Kohena; Son and daughters, Kathleen Kohena of Horseheads, NY, John (Loueva) Kohena of Hector, NY, Kristin Kohena also of Horseheads, NY Grandchildren, Jennifer Spicer of Horseheads, NY, Christopher (Greta) Spicer of Bloomingdale, NY; Great grandchildren, Sage, Bevan, and Tully; Several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of many friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Kohena. Jerry was a veteran of the US Army and a retired administrator with the Elmira Heights Central School District. After his retirement, he continued the work for the District as the Chairperson for the Committee on Special Education. He also worked as a Real-estate Broker for the Blauvelt Gallery of Homes in Horseheads. Among his many contributions, Jerry played an instrumental role in the development and design of UCP in Chemung County, now known as Able 2. He also continued his service as the Director of the Anne B. LeMark Children’s Center. Of his many proud accomplishments was the establishment of the Julius D. Kohena Dental Clinic. He was also a member of the Grand Strand Optimist Club in Myrtle Beach SC, Elmira Heights Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellow and played a vital role in the development of Camp Star, most recently held Watson Homestead. He was member of the Elmira Heights American Legion, Elmira Heights Masonic Lodge and Horseheads Elks Club. For his life time service to the Elmira Heights community he was the recipient of the Elmira Heights Community Service award in 1985. Family and friends are invited to call at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Christian Church, 139 Horseheads Boulevard, Elmira Heights, NY on Thursday Mar. 8, 2012 from 5-7:30 pm. Memorial Service (Panahida) at 7:30. His Funeral Service will take place there in the Church on Friday at 10:00 am. Graveside service with military honors will follow in Holy Trinity Orthodox Cemetery in Elmira Heights.
