Obituary of Audrey L. Matthews

MATTHEWS Audrey Leella Long Matthews, 87, longtime resident of Morrow, Georgia and of late, Bethany Manor in Horseheads, NY, passed away on February 13, 2013. Daughter of Geneva Roberts Long and Roy Alonza Long, Audrey was born in Clayton County, Georgia in January 1926, and grew up in Leary and Jonesboro, Ga. Audrey was pre-deceased by her husband of 56 years, James Edgar (Ed) Matthews Jr, sisters and brothers-in-law Carolyn (Richard) Matthews, M. Doris (Carl) Rivers and Trellis (Frank) Goodman. Surviving family includes her beloved son and daughter in law, Caroline C. and James E. Matthews III. She was the devoted ‘Grandmomma’ of Christopher, Susannah and Katherine Matthews. Also surviving are dearly loved niece Susan Matthews (R. Dean) Wilson and Alex and Alison of Peachtree City and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by good friends and neighbors in Morrow and from the Delta Air Lines family, where Ed worked for 42 years. After graduation from Jonesboro High School, she was a Supervisor of Toll Accounting at Southern Bell for over ten years. Later she was a full time homemaker and a dedicated volunteer in Morrow’s schools, her church, and the community. Audrey and Ed lived in Morrow for almost 60 years and were active at Morrow 1st United Methodist Church and its Marvin Foster Sunday School class. As the wife of a former mayor of Morrow, she remained passionate about politics and about Morrow. For many years she and Ed enjoyed spending their free time with her sister Carolyn and brother in law Dick at their cottages near Wakulla Springs in Florida’s panhandle, fishing off St. Marks. A memorial service will be held Friday February 22 at 2:00 pm at Morrow First United Methodist Church, 5985 N. Main St, Morrow, GA 30260, the Reverend Dr. Edward Judy officiating. The family will receive friends at the conclusion of services. Burial at the convenience of the family.
