Obituary of Richard C. Schockner
Schockner, Richard "Dick" C
Age 94 of Horseheads, NY passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.
Dick is survived by his loving family, wife, Margaret "Peg" Schockner of Horseheads, NY;
children, Richard C. (Rowan) Schockner, Jr. of Watkins Glen, NY,
Linda (Evaristo) Vera of Henrietta, NY,
William "Bill" (Leslie Darman) Schockner of Baltimore, MD;
grandchildren, Emma and Hannah Schockner and Simon and Marlena Vera-Schockner;
sister-in-law, Mildred "Bobs" Schockner;
nieces, Sandie, Leslie, Allison, Marge and Pat.
Dick was born in Clifton, NJ to the late Curt and Ratie (Bakelar) Schockner.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brothers, Lester, Raymond, Lawrence, and Henry Schockner
During WWII, Dick began his service in the US Army, before transferring to the US Navy where he served aboard the USS Oyster Bay in Samar, Philippines. He was honorably awarded the American Theater Medal, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He earned his BS in mechanical engineering from Newark College of Engineering in 1956 while working in camera design and layout at Allen B. DuMont Laboratories, a television company in NJ. He was then employed by Westinghouse Corporation in Horseheads, NY, in 1957 to work as a product design engineer in the Power Tube Division. He later designed radiation detectors before retiring from Westinghouse in 1986.
Dick had a curiosity and interests in many things. He was an avid sailor, figure skater and outdoorsman. He enjoyed studying the weather, local archeology, birding, stamp and coin collecting. For many years, he was a Big Flats Rotarian and played guitar with the Elmirans. He had a great sense of humor, a particular enjoyment of puns. Dick enjoyed playing and was quite good at cards, particularly bridge and pinochle.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, Inc., 413 S. Main St., Horseheads on Monday, February 2, 2015, from 2-4:00 pm. Interment services will be private with full military honors accorded.
