Obituary of Roger B. Whiting

WHITING, Roger B. age 71of Bush Ave. Horseheads, passed away unexpectedly on Sun. Jun. 13, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Catherine (Toole) Whiting. beloved daughter, Stacy (Paul) Richmond of Horseheads, adored granddaughters, Jenna and Allison Richmond. Sisters, Jean Brate of Woodhull, Joan Mitchell of Elmira, Sharon (Frank) Dunkle of Pine City, Beredene Whiting of Lyons, brother, John (Marilyn) Lyon of Ojai, CA sister-in-law, Candy Whiting of Corning, sister-in-law, Diane Lyon of Long Island, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Roger was also predeceased by parents, Jack and Gertrude Whiting and Virginia June; brothers, Paul Lyon and Dan Whiting; brothers-in-law, J.W. Mitchell and Don Brate. Roger retired from NYSEG as a Pipe Fitter. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a communicant for over 43 years at St. Mary’s in Elmira. He loved to travel with his wife as they traveled 50 states. Roger loved his family, you could always find “Papa-Rog” at a sporting event cheering for his grandkids and their teammates. He touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. His winning smile, compassion for others, and love for life was infectious. Roger gave the best gifts of all to Mary Catherine, Stacy, Paul, Jenna and Alli-his time and unconditional love. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Wed. June 16, 2010 from 4-7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church 224 Franklin St., Elmira, NY on Thursday June 17, 2010 at 10:00 am. Interment to follow in St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded. In lieu flowers, memorials can be made to the Southern Tier Food Bank 945 County Rt. 64 Elmira, NY 14903 as Roger felt no one should go hungry.
