Obituary of Joseph A. Smith

SMITH, Joseph A. Joseph Alson Smith, age 93 of 1819 Wilawana Road, Elmira NY, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2010 in Waverly, NY. He was born June 30, 1916 in Williamsport PA, the son of Job W. Smith and Alice E. Hawley of Williamsport. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Bell in her infancy; a brother, David Nelson Smith of Williamsport; a sister, Ethel Evangeline (Mrs. Eugene Canadé) of Paris, France; and his loving wife of 62 years, Mary E. Webb of South Williamsport, the daughter of George S. and Charlotte Bensinger Webb of South Williamsport. Joseph's name came from his mother's grandfathers, Joseph Hawley and Alson Tiffany. He moved to Elmira in 1937 and worked for the Elmira Savings Bank on their remodeling team. Later, he opened his own painting and decorating business and became well known in the area for his work. He was active in the Boy Scouts, with his wife Mary, he was a charter member of the Chemung Valley Audubon Society, and he loved to hunt, fish, hike, golf, square dance and take long rides. During his entire life, he always put others first and was well liked by all he knew. Joe is survived by two sons, David H. (Virginia Miller) Smith, Sr. and Gary B. (Tamara Quinn) Smith, all of Wilawana Road; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Grandchildren are David H. (Ann Blood) Smith, Jr. of Corning, Alice E. (Jason Morse) of Corning, Heather S. (Christopher Taylor) of Elmira, and Timothy M. (Kansass Holmes) Smith of Corning, Stacy Lynn (Jerry Congdon) of Binghamton, Travis B. Smith of Apalachin, and Chad G. Smith of Apalachin, NY; great grand-children include Andrew, Garrett, Jackson and Wyatt Smith, Kerrigan Morse, Brian and Daniel Taylor, and Evie Smith. Also surviving are many special nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, Inc., 413 South Main St., Horseheads, NY on Mon., June 28, 2010 from Noon – 2p.m. His service will take place there at the funeral home at 2p.m. Interment and military honors to follow in Hanlon Hill Cemetery, Ridgebury Twp.
