Obituary of Yvonne M. Simmons

SIMMONS, Yvonne (Steichen) Age 73 of Horseheads passed from this life Sat. Sept. 4, 2010 at home surrounded by her family. Yvonne (Vonny) was born Sept. 22, 1936 in Cold Springs, MN a daughter to the late Aloyisius Steichen and Desdemona Hakala. She attended St. Boniface Elementary and High School there. After graduation she took one year of music at St. Benedict’s College in St, Joseph MN. She worked as a secretary for Cold Spring Granite Co. for two years and then moved to Long Beach, CA where she worked as a secretary and payroll clerk for Mastic Tile Corp for two years. In Long Beach she met her husband Floyd where he was stationed at the Marine Corps Base in Twenty-Nine Palms CA. In 1957 she moved back to Minnesota and on April 19, 1958 she and Floyd Simmons were United in Marriage. She worked on and off while raising their seven children. In 1978 Vonny, her husband Floyd and family moved to New York to help with a church in Buffalo. Later in 1979 they moved to Horseheads and were instrumental in the building of the United Pentecostal Church on the corner of N. Main St. and Westlake St. in Horseheads. Yvonne was an avid reader, she was also very proficient in math, she liked to help her grandchildren with their math homework. In her 50’s she returned to college and graduated form Corning Community College. She liked to do Sudoku puzzles. Above everything her main priorities in life were the church (She loved the Lord) and her family. When anyone needed help or assistance she was ready to lend a hand or impart words of wisdom. In addition to her devoted husband of 52 years, Floyd Simmons they are survived by their children, Michael (Constance) Simmons, Bruce (Lisa) Simmons, Robert (Selena) Simmons, Phillip (Michelle) Simmons and Neil (Shelly) Simmons all of Fort Wayne, IN, Cheryl (Lee) Talasleian of Horseheads, NY, Pamela (LeVerne) Lamie of Erin, NY; 17 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; Sister, Ramona Cole and Janette Taufen also many dear family members, saints in the Lord and friends and predeceased by her sister, Delphine. Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home 413 S. Main St. Horseheads on Wed Sept.8, 2010 from 3--5:00 pm where her service will follow at 5:00 pm. Interment in Bath National Cemetery at the convenience of her family. Those wishing may also remember Vonny with memorials to Save Our Children Campaign c/o United Pentecostal Church 203 N.
