Obituary of Manfred Luppold

LUPPOLD, Manfred Sgt. Major US Marine Corps (Retired) Age 85 of Big Flats passed away Monday, November 22, 2010. He was born in White Haven, PA, 26, January 1925. He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Ely. Manfred is survived by his son, Manfred Karl and his wife, Randine of Denver, CO and their children, Alison Margaret and Karl Luther; His daughter, Cynthia Jane Alves and her husband, Matthew Alves of Kalamazoo, MI and their children, Louise, Martha, and Claire. Manfred is also survived by his wife, Florence Richel Foley Luppold and her children, Stephen and Holly Foley of Charlotte, NC, Marianne and Lester Reimsnyder III of Beaver Dams, NY, Joanne Foley of Florence, MT, Barbara and Mike Kohberger of Erin, NY, Karen (Ray) Thrall of Erin, NY, Joyce Hexum of Millport, NY, Kathleen (John Hedlund) Foley-of Coldspring, NY, as well Florence’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. Manfred is retired from the US Marine Corps after serving 32 years. He is a survivor of the Battle for Iwo Jima and attended many Reunions of the 5th Marine Division with his comrade Marines who served through the 1945 battle. He was also retired after 24 years from Pfizer Laboratories and 9 years with St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira, NY. Manfred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Big Flats, NY, a member of the Horseheads Elks BPOE #2297 the National Warplane Museum and the E.J. Brewer Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Manfred was a volunteer of the American Red Cross and RSVP Advisory Board of Chemung County. Family and friend are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 South Main Street, Horseheads, NY on Friday, November 26, 2010 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 pm where his service will follow at 1:00 p.m. the Rev. Rick Price will officiate. Burial service will follow in Woodlawn National Cemetery Elmira, NY, where military honors will be accorded by the E.J. Brewer Detachment Firing Squad.
