Obituary of Leopold E. Gaboriault

Leopold Edmund Gaboriault HORSEHEADS - Age 93, of Horseheads, NY. He was born on June 22nd, 1928 in Mineville, NY, one of 13 children of the late Ovila and Rose (Levesque) Gaboriault. Leo passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family on Friday, April 22nd, 2022. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 71 years, Mabel R. Gaboriault; five brothers and sisters-in-law: Rene (Lillian) Gaboriault, Norman Gaboriault, Leonard (Louise) Gaboriault, Eugene Gaboriault, and Richard Gaboriault; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Anita (Harold) Goodrich, Gertrude (Frank) North, and Yvonne (Steven) Condon; brother-in-law Aurel Rochon. He is survived by his two sons: Joseph Gaboriault and David Gaboriault; grandchildren Jessica (Dylan) Sacks and Amanda Gaboriault; sister Margaret Rochon; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Clement (Joyce) Gaboriault, Roger (Margaret) Gaboriault, and Robert (Jean) Gaboriault; sister-in-law Beverly Witter. Leo proudly served in the United States Marine Corps on active duty from 1948 to 1952. He earned the ranking of Sergeant. He spent time in Guam, Japan, and Korea. While in Korea, he served on the USS Helena and received a Korean Service Medal. He was also awarded a UN Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He participated in combat operations and shore bombardment missions against the Chinese Communists in 1951. After being honorably discharged from active duty in 1952, he continued to serve in the USMC Reserves from 1952 to 1957. Following his military career, Leo was a dedicated employee of the United States Postal Service and spent more than 25 years with the post office. He was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year in 2004 and 2012 for his dedicated service to improve the lives of individuals and families in Chemung County and the town of Catlin. Most importantly, Leo was a family man. Leo was very involved with his sons Cub Scouts troop and was awarded Cub Scout Leadership in 1966. He was a man of many talents and was known to be a brilliant mechanic. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He was a father figure to all who knew him and will be dearly missed. The family of Mabel and Leo Gaboriault welcome family and friends to join us as our loved ones are interred in their final resting place. Please join us for a military ceremony on Friday, June 10th, 2022 at 11:00 am at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, NY. Entrance is located at 1825 Davis St. near the corner of Davis St and Warnick St. There is limited parking at the cemetery. On street parking is available. Barber Funeral Home will be assisting with interment ceremony and can help with directions once at the cemetery. Following the ceremony, please join us for a Celebration of Life Luncheon at the Horseheads Elks Lodge located at 6 Prospect Hill Road, Horseheads, NY 14845. The luncheon will take place from 12:00-3:00 pm. All are welcome.
